Behavioral Therapy at Irby Psychological Services

About this service

Behavior is communication. When a child is struggling, we look first to understand what the behavior is telling us — then build the skills and supports that help them thrive.

We believe that parents and caregivers are the true experts on their children and the most powerful agents of long-lasting change. Behavioral challenges rarely happen in isolation, which is why most of our interventions are strongly family-focused. These services are ideal for children, adolescents, and adults with neurodevelopmental conditions and their families, as well as those navigating general behavioral challenges like noncompliance or disruptive behaviors.

Children learn and adapt best when their daily environments are consistent. We partner closely with parents, providing hands-on coaching, actionable tools, and ongoing guidance to ensure positive behavior changes carry over from our clinic sessions into home, school, and community.

A flagship program is Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), an evidence-based treatment for young children experiencing disruptive behavior — more on how its live coaching works below.

Progress is measured in everyday life — at home, at school, in the community.

What we help with

Autism, ADHD & related conditions

Behavioral support tailored to neurodevelopmental needs, helping children and families build skills and manage daily challenges.

Noncompliance & defiance

Practical frameworks to address oppositional behavior, refusal to follow directions, and severe daily routines or transition struggles. Parents learn how to set clear boundaries and reinforce positive cooperation.

Toileting support

Tailored behavioral protocols for potty training readiness, chronic accidents, toilet refusal, or bowel withholding. We establish low-stress routines that build your child's independence and comfort.

Selective eating

Evidence-based approaches for extreme picky eating, food anxiety, or limited dietary variety. We focus on reducing mealtime battles and expanding accepted textures and food groups.

Sleep support

Customized sleep strategies for bedtime stalling, difficulty falling asleep, frequent night waking, or co-sleeping transitions. We guide families toward calm, predictable bedtime routines that ensure healthy rest for the whole family.

School refusal

Collaborative strategies for children experiencing severe anxiety, distress, or refusal around attending school. We work alongside parents and educational staff to build gradual, successful return-to-school plans.

Anxiety & habit reversal

Targeted approaches to reduce anxiety and help children break habits that interfere with everyday functioning.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based, specialized treatment program for young children — typically ages 2 to 7, with modified protocols available for children younger than 2 and older than 7 — experiencing disruptive behavior, frequent tantrums, aggression, or noncompliance.

Unlike traditional talk therapies, PCIT focuses on live, real-time coaching. While you interact and play with your child, a trained therapist observes through a one-way mirror or video feed and provides real-time coaching directly into your ear via a small earpiece. PCIT is divided into two phases:

Child-Directed Interaction (CDI)

Strengthens the parent-child bond, increases positive behaviors, and builds your child's self-esteem through warm, targeted play techniques.

Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI)

Teaches parents clear, consistent, and predictable discipline strategies to manage challenging behaviors calmly and confidently.

By working directly through live coaching, parents gain immediate confidence and practical skills that transform home dynamics.
