Teaching the Values

The next part of being a hospitable leader is teaching the values! This step goes along with the mission of IPS! It is not about each person’s individual values, per se, but rather the values that we determine are appropriate for our organization! Knowing whose values we are following at work will help us make better decisions.

To do help teach the values we cannot only lead by example! Leading by example is only half of the equation, as it shows others what to do, but does not entirely teach them what to do themselves! Thinking about this from an ABA standpoint, it is like behavior skills training where we start with telling others what to do, then showing them what to do, and then finally, doing it with them.

Furthermore, we must clearly communicate and reinforce our expectations and values with other members of the team! We can communicate effectively with appropriate signage with reminders of expectations, stories about our values in action, and direct training on our values as a company!

This week, I’d like for each of you to think about IPS’s values and share them in the All IPS chat! What is one value that you think as a company we demonstrate regularly? One that I think we do well is praising each other for our successes and supporting each other when they are unable to complete tasks related to their job — bonus points if you shout it out in the chat showing that you’ve read this far in the newsletter! Join me next week for our 8th installment: Appreciating and Celebrating the Team!
